Region V PDC Minutes

February 3, 2004

Teleconference Attendance:  Mickey, Bryan, Smith, Boggs for Kostrub, Pelser, Allen, Alfonso, Gornto, Renick, Frederick

Welcome was extended by Mickey. Council members were asked to check to see that all materials forwarded by email were in their possession.  Several members noted that did not have materials to be discussed (evaluations from Broward December training and Palm Beach January training). Materials forward by email or fax to said members. Some members were not present, but had indicated they would be arriving later. Mickey noted some corrections needed for email addresses.

Bryan extended thank you’s to both Broward County and Palm Beach county representatives for the excellent workshops in both locations.  She noted that the support of the staff and Council members in both locations assured a successful venture.  Special thanks were extended to Allen, Alfonso, Boggs, Lido, Pelser, and Smith. She also noted that the “best practices” speakers were definitely to be commended as well. She then asked the Council member to review the evaluations for a comprehensive overview of what had occurred.  She noted the attachments were sent via email.

Minutes for November meeting were reviewed and then approved with minor corrections.(Pelser/Alfonso) Concern was expressed about lack of active Council members and the need to review the current status of members.    Mickey indicated she had contacted a number of members who were not in attendance and was attempting to get an accurate account of who was or was not remaining active. Several names were suggested as replacements for inactive members.

Mickey noted the absence of a DOE representative and the effort to secure a person for the meeting.  She was not aware of what prevented attendance by the representative.  Based on her current knowledge, Shrestha, McNeely and Powell were all contacted.

Mickey noted that Region V needed to submit award nominations to DOE for upcoming events.  She also noted that February was vocational month and we needed to coordinate activities in the Region related to that area.  No one was aware of any activities that were planned.

Bryan provided an update on the Region V PDC Adult Education grant. She indicated that the grant called for six (6) trainings to serve 150 people, and four conference meetings with 40 attendees and a tutorial that served 25 individuals was required for this year’s grant.  At this stage, two major trainings had occurred that served 202 participants, two formal conference meetings have been documented (with 34 participants), and the tutorial was under construction. She noted that several activities had been discussed at the initial planning meeting and she needed information if the planning was still active or needed to remain active:

  • Multiple intelligences in April through Renick
  • GED-possibly at the Pines Center with Guglielmino or someone from the GED Task force
  • Integration of technology by FAU in Palm Beach in May
  • Transition or recruitment at Dade in April
  • Quality Assurances by DJJ
  • FCAT training in reading and math for any or all of the counties

Alfonso noted the training to be offered at Miami-Dade had changed somewhat due to personnel changes, but the Miami-Dade would still host a training event.  Boggs indicated that she would be present with materials at as many of the trainings as was feasible and coordinate her training for the Region V Adult Literacy Center is possible.

Smith and Bryan also noted that based on that initial meeting, the career and technical activities mirrored some of the adult education activities and could be offered simultaneously, eg.:

  • Integration of technology at the Pines Center
  • FCAT training in reading and math for any or all counties

Automotive training was the only area that seemed stand alone with career and technical at the time.

After extensive discussion regarding the Career and Technical grant and its needs, it was suggested that the FCAT person (Southern) be contacted to set up some FCAT trainings. Smith agreed to host the discussion at the FIU-Pines facility.

It was suggested that Mickey contact the absent members and see what their plans were and then to suggest replacement members.  John Carvelli was suggested as a replacement for Cheryl Baker and Enid Conley was suggested as a replacement for Dan Vega.

Discussion then followed about coordinating the final training events. It was decided that the technology training for adult education would occur in Palm Beach with Pelser and the technology training for career and technical would occur in Dade or Broward with Gornto or the automotive group.

Both adult education and career and technical would follow up in assisting with FCAT training as needed-either providing materials, or trainers, or travel or in rare case, space, and pay substitutes.  Rental of facilities was not an option due to grant restrictions. The importance of this training was viewed as significant even though it was noted that the training costs were high.  The Council members present all express support for using the funds that would best meet the needs of the Region.  FCAT training appeared to be a significant need for all counties.

It was further decided that a meeting would be called for select members to address the FCAT training and select trainers.  Smith agreed to host that meeting at the Pines Center in February.

Discussion then followed as to best location and meeting location for the next Council meeting.  A date in May was to be explored. Meeting was adjourned.
