Region V Professional Development Council 
Minutes of the Tuesday, October 10th, Meeting 
Via Teleconference, Originating from Tallahassee



Attendance: Dennis Adams, John Andola, Melody Chaykin, Sandra Hannah, Carrie Mickey, Chair,
Marzeli Smith (for Sheila Long), Don Vega. Also participating: Connie Hicks-Evans, Pamela

Meeting convened at 10:03 am. 

  1. Sandra Hannah was welcomed as the new representative for the area’s workforce development
    agencies. 

  2. Today’s agenda approved (moved Cheykin, 2nd Marzeli). 

  3. Approval of minutes of September 14, 2000. 
    3.1. Item 4.1.1.1.: Director Costen

  4. Region V 1999-2000 PDC Leadership Activities. 
    4.1. Web Based Learning at the Grass Roots. No new report was necessary, as no additional
    activities since the Aug. 29th meeting needed to be conducted. Members were reminded that all the
    material from the programs conducted this year are on the web site for Region V,
    www.adulteducation.fau..edu/region5. 
    4.2. Planning and Budgeting Within a Performance Based Environment. No new report was
    necessary, as no additional activities since the Aug. 29th meeting needed to be conducted. 
    4.3. Adult Education Summits 1 & 2: No new report was necessary, as no additional activities
    since the Aug. 29th meeting needed to be conducted. The issues identified in Summit 1 will be sent
    to all participants and Council members shortly. 

  5. Region V 2000-2001 PDC Leadership Staff Development Proposals 
    5.1. Status of $30,000 proposal (The initial allocation of $25,000 plus $5,000 to be earmarked for
    staff development for disabled adults.). 
    5.1.1. The emphasis of the initial allocation ($25,000) should be further staff development of
    teachers and teacher trainers on the general area of assessment. More specifically, the focus
    recommended was on checklists (the Florida Education Curriculum Checklist, testing, portfolios, and
    LCPs and OCPs). 
    5.1.2. Two proposed programs from the proposed activities for the $100,000 grant –
    Leadership Seminar on Testing and Leadership Workshop on LCP/OCP could be combined with
    5.1.1., providing additional funds from the $100K grant for other activities. 
    5.1.3. The “Bridges” program was proposed to be the emphasis for the staff development for
    disabled adults program. 
    5.2. Status of $100,000 proposal. 
    5.2.1. An email from Pam Shrestha listing nine possible activities were discussed. Following
    are the activities and proposed actions: 
    1. Grant Management Workshop ($5000). Needed because of many
    misunderstandings. Could be a teleconference session. 
    2. Grant Writing Workshop ($5000). Guidance for present and desired CBOs. 
    3. Policy Leadership Summit & White Paper. For administrators and policy makers;
    similar format of September Summits. 
    4. Web Based Leadership Training ($5000). Continuation of 2000 training, from FAU,
    with emphasis on maintenance and further development. 
    5. Planning, Budgeting and Data Collection Workshop (10,000). Further development
    of issues and practices identified in July 2000 workshop. 
    6. Leadership Seminar on Testing. Proposed moving this and #7 to $30K grant (see
    5.1.2. above). 
    7. Leadership Workshop on LCP/OCP. Proposed moving this and #6 to $30K grant
    (see 5.1.2. above). 
    8. Regional Adult Literacy Consortium. Not in this proposal, but should be included in
    any master staff development training calendar. 
    9. FutureNET. A region wide staff development workshop for all adult education
    teachers, administrators, staff. Format similar to Miami-Dade’s FutureNET, and Broward’s Focus
    on Broward. 
    5.2.2. Decisions about these activities will be made at the next meeting (Nov. 8th). 

  6. Council membership.
