Learn the basics behind the Pre-GED course and lessons from the early implementing agencies. Reading Strategies for the GED Part 1: Presenter: Carol Charvet & Jan Lichtenwalter Participants will learn strategies based on brain research to help improve reading in the content areas. ESOL Business Realia Program: Presenter: Ana Maria Guadayol Uses real world articles about hot topics in business (leaving a job, negotiating salary increases, creating resumes, etc.). When students are asked to problem-solve, the result is English language acquisition in a real world context. VESOL Civics through Service Learning: Presenter: Marta Bret Uses experiential and service learning activity. Students compile learning portfolios in video, photos and other props. Blue Book Journaling: Presenter: Robert Kelso Addresses testing skills with blue books to enhance reading ability and reduce testing anxiety. This technique was used for Foundation and Level A ESOL classes but could be used in any level. Writing goes from basic journaling to creating conversations between teacher and student. This helps to break down student’s fear of writing in a foreign language in a non-judgmental activity. 11:05 - 11:50 Concurrent Sessions Successful Pre-GED: Presenter: Tony Lagos Last year Pre-GED was added to Florida’s Course Code Directory. ESOL & Family Literacy: Greeting Cards & Scrap Booking Project: Presenter: Sharon Kantor Addresses decision-making skills and action plans in a highly creative, non-threatening learning environment. The standards required in both LCP checklists have many similarities. The combining of the Workforce/Workplace Readiness- ABE component to VESOL 2 class increased the LCP count. The Mobile Lending Library with the VESOL Program: Presenter: Stephen Moir Provides a lending library to enhance reading ability at appropriate levels to demonstrate the reading comprehension .
